What To Expect From Simplisse®

A new brand and a whole new way to think about expressing breastmilk.

Every breastfeeding mom would prefer comfortable lactation or milk expression. Through extensive research and testing, Simplisse® has developed a revolutionary milk expression experience unlike any other that closely – and comfortably – simulates the way baby elicits milk during breastfeeding. In fact, the Simplisse® Breast Pump is so gentle and different, many moms don’t even realize that it is working when they first try it. You can expect comfort and efficiency from an innovation that is designed to gently work like your baby, emphasizing compression technology, not suction.

Gentle Compression Technology Naturally and comfortably elicits milk – just like baby.
Simplisse® set out on a mission to enhance the breastfeeding experience of moms by mimicking the actions of baby during breastfeeding. Years of extensive research and careful observation discovered that babies do not use high suction or pressure on a mother’s nipple. Rather, baby uses a light latching pressure that simply holds mom’s breast in their mouth. The baby’s tongue and jaws move against the nipple and areola, which causes the milk ducts to contract and elicit milk ejection. This gentle eliciting form of milk expression is accurately mimicked by the Simplisse® Breast Pump. You can expect gentler, more comfortable milk expression that feels less like a pump and more like baby.
Super-Soft BabyFace® Flexible Breastcups Mimics baby’s mouth and tongue

The two-part breastcup of the Simplisse® Double Electric Breast Pump is another main design component that sets our pump apart. The outer breastcup emulates baby’s mouth during breastfeeding by gently compressing the areola, while the inner breastcup produces a fluttering motion – like baby’s tongue – again, to comfortably elicit milk. The breastcups are made of a very soft and flexible material that’s almost squishy, so it form-fits to mom’s breast and moves with mom while expressing.

Using the Simplisse® Breast Pump Control Knobs: The Flow Dial regulates the airflow that the Breast Pump generates. The Speed Dial determines the rate of the cycle.

Start with the knobs set in the middle of each range, with Speed at 5 and Flow at C. Adjust the knobs for your comfort and to match your baby’s eating style. For example, if your baby eats quickly, set the Speed knob between 5 and 10. If your baby nurses more slowly, set the Speed knob between 1 and 5. If your flow of milk into the collection bottle is fast, set the Flow knob between C and E. If your flow of milk is slower, set the Flow knob in the A to C range.

Milk Volumes

Many moms have questions about milk flow volumes when breastfeeding and expressing. Expressing milk is different for each mom. The amount of milk you express will be different than the amount of another mom. The difference is based on many factors, including:

  • The size and age of your baby. The older and larger the baby, the more milk you are likely to produce. It is common for new moms to have smaller milk volumes at first – oftentimes under half an ounce during the first few days.
  • The time of day you express. Many moms find milk flow volumes to be higher in the morning. In general, milk volumes tend to be less during afternoon and evening hours but every mom is different.
  • When you last breastfed baby. The further away you are from your last feeding session, the more milk you are likely to have for expressing. Other issues like engorgement can impact those milk volumes.
  • How often your baby breastfeeds. Moms with frequent breastfeeding patterns may experience smaller milk volumes when expressing.
  • Your baby’s growth pattern. If your baby is in a growth spurt for example, you may get less milk when expressing because your baby is already consuming the milk during breastfeeding.

Breakthrough Innovation Based on Extensive Research and Testing

Simplisse® was created on a simple premise – that there was a more comfortable way to express breastmilk than non-compression pumps with plastic cone-shaped breastcups. So, we went straight to the source for inspiration: moms, babies, and the biological interaction during breastfeeding. After development, we embarked on an 18-month period of extensive research and testing, and a new milk expression technology was born.

Baby’s Breastfeeding Motions: Study of Baby at the Breast

Our Simplisse® engineering team, including Dr. Jimi Francis, IBLBC and a Ph.D. in Infant Nutrition, carefully studied the biological nursing patterns of babies during breastfeeding. Then they applied this research to create a milk expression experience that works very much like baby. Here’s how they specifically applied their findings:

Research: Baby does not distort, squish or pull on the nipple. In fact, there is little, if any, pain in this process.

Innovation: The Simplisse® Breast Pump replicates this with a breastcup that conforms to mom’s breast without distorting the nipple, thus gently eliciting milk ejection.

Research: Baby is not sucking during the breastfeeding process. Baby uses a fluttering motion with the tongue and causes milk to spray into baby’s mouth.

Innovation: The Simplisse® Breast Pump mimics this natural occurrence with a gentle experience that comfortably elicits milk.

Research: Much of baby’s face is in contact with mom’s breast to help initiate the elicitation process.

Innovation: The Simplisse® Breast Pump features soft, flexible breastcups that conform to mom’s breast like baby’s face.

Engorgement Relief: What Moms Report

While engorgement relief was not a specific objective in the development of the Breast Pump, many test moms reported that because it was so soft and comfortable, they were able to use the pump during engorgement to gently elicit some of the milk pressure that had been accumulating. The Breast Pump seems to help provide relief to moms experiencing engorgement.

In general, when switching from one breast pump to another, there will be a transition period. If you have decided to transition from your pump to Simplisse®, these transitions are usually short but can vary from mom to mom. Simplisse® expression works and feels different and this is what you can expect:

  • Most moms that transition from other breast pumps to Simplisse® experience a small transition period as they adjust from a pulling sensation to a compression sensation.
  • This is usually a couple of days but some moms transition faster and some moms take longer. Typically moms are successful after 1 to 5 days.

  • During your transition you will notice that the Simplisse® Breast Pump does not feel like your previous breast pump. This is because it is designed to feel different, so stick with it and positive results will follow.

  • During transition, moms may need to express their milk more frequently. Moms should express for 10 minutes several times each day to sustain their milk volumes. For example, if you are getting fewer ounces when you first try the Simplisse®, simply add one or two additional expressing sessions per day during your transition period.
